  1. [S3114] In the Shenandoah County, Virginia Minute Book, it is recorded on 14 April 14, 1807 that John Horner was bound to Ulrich Beydler "to learn the art of farming". I states that he was 8 years old on the 9th day of May last. It is presumed this is the most accurate accounting of his birth date;. It also identifies Joseph Horner as his father.

MarriageAbt 1888John Wesley Horner and Martha Ellen Hill were married abt 1888 in Kentucky, United States. [CIT:]The marriage certificate filed in Rowan County clearly states they were married 6 Oct 1898 while the 1900 census clearly shows that they had been married 12 years. The 1900 census shows that Martha had five children. Presumably these were not the result of a previous marriage since her marriage license indicates she was single when she married John Horner. The data tends to support a marriage around 1888. I do not know what the reason is for this descrepency. Maybe 1888 was a common law marriage and 1898 was a legal marriage.[:CIT]4,9,10
