They were rumored to have gone to California. For years, Rachel would keep watch on the road, half expecting him to come to his senses and return. Fernando and Henry took care of her in her later years.1

Note* Joseph Howard Smith Joseph went by his middle name of Howard. That habit also appealed to his wife and children as they also went by their middle names. He was born on father Fernando's Brookside Farm and learned the honorable profession of farming. He became very well acquainted with with the tail end of the draft horses Dick and Dan, as he followed them for endless miles across the fields. It wasn't until 1955 that tractors outnumbered horses in that area. Howard met Margaret Lucile Holaday during a family visit to Mooreland, Indiana, eventually marrying her. Besides farming, they were active in livestock, keeping hogs, chickens, sheep and of course cattle. After Lucile passed away, Howard was lonely and remarried.1

They married early, but WWII interrupted their plans. He joined the Army Air Corp, assigned to the 44th Division. Following his service he developed hay fever and moved the family to Arizona. After working for Motorola, he founded a million dollar company and enjoyed exploring the mountains. Later in life he spent summers in Indiana with two of his sisters.1

In 1960 her husband's health forced them to move to Arizona where she became a reading teacher for the Mesa School District and founding member of St. Andrews Methodist church in Mesa.1
