Rachel Harvey1
F, #10325, b. 9 Oct 1834, d. 25 Jun 1915
Note* | | Rachel Harvey Rachel was likely raised in the local Sugar Ridge Monthly Meeting to devout, Quaker parents. She married outside her faith to Jesse Smith, a local farmer. They had a rough start losing his mother and a baby. They finally settled in, raising a family and farming around the village of Aroma. Jesse left farm and family when he was about 50, to elope with one Sadie Lister-Harvey. He likely met her on one of the family visits to Mooreland, Indiana. They were rumored to have gone to California. For years, Rachel would keep watch on the road, half expecting him to come to his senses and return. Fernando and Henry took care of her in her later years.1 |

Fernando Wood Smith1
M, #10327, b. Jun 1863, d. 1954
Note* | | Fernando Wood Smith Fernando was probably the best natured person you could ever meet. He seldom became excited and cherished his two children because they had a rough start when born. He was very conscientious, teaching Sunday School in Aroma and taking care of his mother when her husband abandoned her. He once took a vacation, proven by a picture of he and his friend on a beach in Florida. They both sported the full length, striped swimsuits of the era. Fernando was a kind person and eager to help.1 |

Joseph Howard Smith1
M, #10329, b. 1900, d. 1977
Note* | | Joseph Howard Smith Joseph went by his middle name of Howard. That habit also appealed to his wife and children as they also went by their middle names. He was born on father Fernando's Brookside Farm and learned the honorable profession of farming. He became very well acquainted with with the tail end of the draft horses Dick and Dan, as he followed them for endless miles across the fields. It wasn't until 1955 that tractors outnumbered horses in that area. Howard met Margaret Lucile Holaday during a family visit to Mooreland, Indiana, eventually marrying her. Glendon Francis Smith1
M, #10331, b. 28 Aug 1922, d. 4 Dec 2008
Note* | | Glendon Francis Smith Glen began life on the Smith farm when one horsepower really meant the pulling power of one horse. He progressed in agriculture and proved to be an analytical thinker and problem solver. That is, until he met Betty Miller in Frankton, Indiana school. Then she was all he thought of. They married early, but WWII interrupted their plans. He joined the Army Air Corp, assigned to the 44th Division. Following his service he developed hay fever and moved the family to Arizona. After working for Motorola, he founded a million dollar company and enjoyed exploring the mountains. Later in life he spent summers in Indiana with two of his sisters.1 |

She married Glendon Smith at an early age raising four boys at the same time as her widowed and remarried mother, Ethel (Pflueger) Johnson, was raising three more kids. They bought their own farm just S/W of Elwood City and worked hard to build it up. Money was scarce, however she managed to take care of her family getting the boys to Little League games and Sunday School in the Aroma Methodist church. In 1960 her husband's health forced them to move to Arizona where she became a reading teacher for the Mesa School District and founding member of St. Andrews Methodist church in Mesa.1 |
