That is based on the following 3 points: (1) In the 1900 Census, Pearl does not appear with Willard and Kittie, even though she would have already been born. In addition, the census shows that Pearl had never had any children. (2) Pearl appears in the 1905 Kansas State Census which would presumably place her adoption date between the 1900 census and the 1905 census. (3) In the 1910 census, it is not stated that Kittie has ever had any children. In addition, the birthplace of Pearl's parents is stated as "un." which is interpreted as "unknown" instead of giving the birthplaces of Willard and Kittie.
