Biographical (fam) | | Biographical article for Anna C. Gumm and Charles Newton Canaday. Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Canaday, two of Carrollton's most estimable people, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary Tuesday, July 22, when a number of their relatives and friends gathered at their home, 212 East Fifth Street, to offer congratulations and wish them many more years of happiness and prosperity.
Mr. and Mrs. Canaday were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents, J. F. and Almira (Somerville) Gun, near Hale, July 22, 1891, the Rev. J. O. Willett, pastor of the Baptist church at Hale, officiating. Mr. Canaday was born in Henry county, Indiana, March 11, 1851, and Mrs. Canaday is a native of West Virginia, having been born in Pocahontas county, March 16, 1866. Both have been residents of this county more than seventy years. Before their marriage both were teachers in Carroll county schools, Mrs. Canaday retiring after marriage, but Mr. Canaday continuing the profession for twenty-six years. During that time he was principal of the Norborne and Bogard high schools and was among the leading educators of the county for more than a quarter of a century.
In the spring of 1911 he was elected to the office of county superintendent of schools and served for a term of four years. At the expiration of his term as superintendent of schools he engaged in the grocery business at 11 North Boston street, where he operated with success for a period of seven years. At the end of his first three years as teacher he established a store just south of Bogard Mound and entered the mercantile business. When Bogard was established in the early eighties he moved his store to that place and was the first merchant oof the thriving little village.
Mr. and Mrs. Canaday are members of the First Baptist church of Carrollton, Mr. Canaday being a member of the official board and church treasurer. He served for ten years as Moderator of the Missouri Valley Baptist Association and has been active generally in church work throughout his life. Mrs. Canaday is a former Sunday school teacher and has taken a leading part in the ladies activities connected with her church.
They are the parents of two sons, both being leading educators, E. F. Canaday of Raleigh, North Carolina, and E. J. Canaday of Kansas City. They have three granddaughters, Mary Ann and Carol Ann and Mrs. A. E. Simms of Littleton, N. C. Mr. Canaday has one brother, J. P. Canaday, of Glenn Falls, New York.
On Sunday, July 20, a number of the relatives and friends, who were unable to be present on Tuesday, gathered at the home in Carrollton and enjoyed a basket dinner. Lawrence Dye
M, #10875, b. 1802, d. 6 Sep 1879
Note | | Lawrence Dye. Biographical
Lawrence was born in Mason County, Kentucky, the son of Peter Dye and Abigail (Dye) Dye. He was married to (1)Mary Ann VanTrease. Their children are Hiram, Martha, Elizabeth, Angeline, John, Mary and David. He lived briefly in South Carolina while dealing with some financial problems in Kentucky. He was a farmer when, on August 21, 1862, he enlisted in the Volunteer Infantry at Vermilion County, Illinois, as a Private during the Civil War. He was wounded, disabled, and was discharged at Nashville, Tenn., on January 28, 1863, at the age of 45. His wife, Mary Ann, passed away in 1865, and he then married (2)Delilah Mills. By that marriage, he was the father of fraternal twins, Cloyd and Ruvilla; Thomas Columbus, David, and Robert, who were all born after Lawrence was an elderly man.
The information below is courtesy of Robert Jones:
Lawrence and Mary Ann Van Trease/Lawrence and Delilah Mills. Lawrence was the son of Peter (1782-1822) and Abigail Dye (1785-1825). They were first cousins, so the Dye family goes back in two directions. Peter was the son of Kenneth Dye (1757-1817) and Jane Vanderbeck (1765-1815). Abigail was the daughter of William Dye II (called Old Billy) (1740-1806) and Phoebe Mounteer (1743-1818). Both Old Billy and Kenneth were the children of William Dye (Dey) (1718-1784) and Margaret Salter (1720-1799. William Dye was the son of John Laurens Dey (1680-1750) and Ann Brown (1700-1763). John Laurens Dey was the son of Hans Laurentszen Duyts (1644-1708) and Sarah Vincent Fontaine (1660-1740). Hans Laurentszen Duyts was the son of Laurentszen or Laurens Duyts (1610-1667) and Ytie Jansen (1610-1665).
